It's been almost two years since I bought it and the engine compartment got pretty dirty. It has never been washed and I was wondering if I should cover anything (like battery or sparkplugs connectors) before a power wash.Is it safe to power wash the engine compartment of my Civic '07?
if i was u i wouldnt power wash anything under the hood. It may not affect anything the first time but it might if you keep wahing under it. you may be able to wash some things with a squirt bottle and rag so your not soaking anything in water or putting alot of pressure on any componets. But if u insiest on washing under the hood the make sure u cover you disteributor car and as many sensors as posable,and cover your battery for safe measures. power washing the engine bay in not a good idea and that guy that said to turn on the car as you do it is the WRONG idea. If you want to clean it do what you can with a wet rag or towel, Washing with the engine on can crack the block and kill the engine.
cover all electricals, anything with a wire
take it to a car detailer watch them do it and u can see what u need to cover up so later n life u can do it yourself...
also if anything stuffs up wit the electricals the car detailer will be held liable for it....
I've always washed by car engine by simply turning the car on and letting it run while I did the wash. This keeps the water from setting on the electrical parts. Leave the car running for a few mins afterwards to let it dry out good.
water and electric doesnt really get along. but if you have time you can get a can a brake cleaner and wipe it down. it wouldnt harm wires and plastic. and it wouldnt leave any marks.

Is there a way to test deck wood to see if power wash is necessary?
How long should one wait before sealing or staining decks and fences - is there a rule of thumb with how quickly grime sets in where you have to treat the wood first before staining.
Any opinions on what to use other than power washing to clean the wood.
Also, since oil-based stain is going to be banned, what water-based stain and colors work well and how long do they last.Is there a way to test deck wood to see if power wash is necessary?
If you used a good quality of pressure treated wood you can stain it right away. All wood decks should be cleaned and sealed every year if not then 2 years max, that is why everyone is going with the composite decking for their decks now a days. No or very little maintance. Any ideas on how to reach up high to the upper part of siding near roof. I think a regular ladder would be unsafe; you could get blown backwards from pressure coming out of the hose. get a scrub brush like the ones at a car wash get on a ladder and scub with bleach and water. then use your power washer to wash the extra bleach water left behind. Both previous answers are good. They make extensions for pressure washers and them make extensions for scrub brushes. I would use the extension on a scrub brush and a hose nozzle. The pressure washers that I use can peel the paint and even shred the siding off of the house.

I juse purchased a house and the outside is fithy. Can I power wash the aluminum siding on my house.?
depends on whether or not when you rub your hand down the siding if you get a powder like substance on your hands ,
if this is the case wash it very gingerly or you will end up like i did pressure washing the old powder coating off of the house which will cause that siding to not only look like crap but it will eventually begin to get a rusty look to it. we had to replace ours because i did that my husband was livid!
I would suggest that you test an area out of direct view and process with caution with a mild detergent maybe something from fuller brush co. or check your local hardware store

Yes, you can use a pressure washer to clean aluminum siding. Use a house cleaner that is designed to remove mildew and grime. Follow the directions, which usually consists of presoaking the area with the solution in your washer, waiting 10 or 15 minutes, then going back and washing it off.
You do not want to use a high pressure wand; it should come off at a lower pressure.
BTW, do not stand on top of a ladder and use your pressure washer. It can knock your off your ladder, or knock the ladder over. Use a wand extension or a scaffold. The cost of a trip to the hospital after falling off a ladder can easily exceed the cost of painting a house.I juse purchased a house and the outside is fithy. You should be able to use a hand held pump up sprayer, mix 1/2 gallon of bleach with 1 1/2- 2 gallons of water. Start spraying at the bottom and go up. Let is set a short time then rinse using a regular garden hose with a spray nozzle. Spray in the direction where the overlaps in siding will be facing away from the direction of spray. If there are troubled spots, just spray the bleach solution again and use a brush. DO not spray a hard stream up through the soffit vents as it could cause water spots on your ceilings.

get a 2 gallon pump up sprayer and mix one gallon of cheap bleach with one gallon water , start at the top of the walls and work down , one section at a time. Wait about 5 minutes and wash off with a garden hose. 2 gallon size sprayer lets you mix correctly and easily.

my suggestion go to the paint store/home depot / Lowe's and ask for the chems that you can use with /your pressure washer
